From Refugee Camp to a LEED Certified Habitat House on the Southside

COLLIER CONSTRUCTION TO PROVIDE FUNDING AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE FOR THE LEED CERTIFICATION OF THE SOUTHSIDE HABITAT HOUSE

Chattanooga, TN (Nov. 18) - Credit goes to the good people at Coptix for transforming their annual blow-out Christmas party into A Holiday Party Benefiting Habitat for Humanity of Chattanooga and Celebrating the Southside Habitat House, otherwise titled INHABIT. The event serves as the grand finale for MAINx24, the Southside’s annual 24 hour holiday event and will be held at Loose Cannon Gallery, which you should and will most likely attend (if for no other reason, and there are plenty of them, the sheer embarrassment of not being there). “INHABIT is a great event built into another great event. It has all the elements of a powerful experience for every guest who attends.”

The event’s centerpiece is a Habitat House built for a Sudanese refugee family, the Dallas. With the collaboration of Ethan Collier, Josiah Roe of Coptix, architect Thomas Palmer, Jeff Cannon of green|spaces and the fine humanitarian folk at Habitat for Humanity, the Southside Habitat House will be Chattanooga’s first LEED Certified Habitat House.  LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is part of the U.S. Green Building Council and serves as a third-party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.

The build officially begins at the Habitat Warehouse this week, and on Tuesday, November 25th, the build begins at the Union Gospel Mission Site. Throughout construction of the home, Collier Construction carpenters will be on site to educate and assist Habitat for Humanity’s volunteers and workers regarding LEED for Homes building procedures and methods.

In addition, Collier will pay for the LEED Certification of the home. Collier believes that simply calling a home green or building it to LEED standards is not enough. To guarantee that the Southside Habitat House is built to the highest standards in energy efficiency, it will receive third party verification through the LEED Certification process.

LEED Certification provides an important opportunity to invest in sustainable homes, and Collier Construction is grateful for the chance to invest in The Southside Habitat House. Collier believes that green construction is a socially responsible, economical and environmentally healthy way to build lasting homes and stronger communities.
