Collier Construction to Launch ‘See For Yourself!’ Home Tours.

This fall, Collier Construction will give behind-the-scenes tours of a green home under construction. The “See for Yourself!” home tours are offered to help homeowners, homebuyers, realtors and appraisers make informed decisions based on a fundamental understanding of building science.
The home tours will highlight numerous green building methods including advanced framing as well as identify green building materials such as insulated sheathing and expanding foam air-sealants.
Home tours will take place on Saturdays in the months of July, August, September and October.

Trade Secrets: Crawl Space Conversions
No matter the size, age or style of a home, its energy profile matters to the health of the indoor environment and the well-being of our shared environment. So for us, that means providing scalable measures with measurable results – like sealing, insulating and conditioning the crawl space of a once-abandoned, newly renovated, modest urban dwelling.
Two years after Ethan Collier salvaged and rehabbed a once landfill-bound house and transformed it into his own home, Collier Construction sealed up and insulated the attic and crawl space. So let’s look at the energy impact of Ethan’s newly insulated attic and crawl space:
CASE STUDY
House Size: 1,200 sq ft
Description: All duct work is in the crawl space. The system is leaky, so before Collier Construction sealed and insulated the crawl space, Ethan was losing energy to the outside.
Occupants: 4
Problem: Higher energy bills; condensation on floor joists; poor comfort level during summer and winter.
Solution: Air seal and insulate the crawl space. Collier Construction used extruded polystyrene of 2” thickness (R-10) around interior crawl space walls. The crawl space was sealed all the way to floor decking with expanding foam insulation. New plastic was put down and taped to rigid foam board. In addition to insulating the crawl space, we insulated the attic and used an insulated box around pull down ladder.
Energy Difference: Ethan’s electric bill has dropped drastically over the winter. He explained that the bill is almost as cheap as last year when he and his family where out of the country.
