Madison Street won the Green Development of the Year award for 2008
from the Tennessee Chapter of the American Planning Association
Chattanooga, TN (October 12, 2008) – What happens when visionaries team up to pioneer sustainable living? The Southside’s award-winning Madison Street Development (brought to you by developer Christian Rushing, architect Eric Myers, and Builder Ethan Collier).
Six homes in all, the three built by Collier are Chattanooga’s first LEED Certified homes. LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is part of the U.S. Green Building Council and serves as a third-party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.
These 3 new LEED Certified homes are 1540 and 1600 square feet with 3 bedrooms and 2 ½ baths a piece. The beauty of each home is in its simplicity and carefully planned use of space. Each has all the functioning room of a much larger house.
The out-of-the-box thinking spilled over to the exterior of the homes as well. We integrated the use of Marvin high efficiency windows, Hardie panel siding, Zappone Aluminum siding and Forestry Service Certified (green, LEED) Siberian Larch porches (take a breath). Smart meant using standing seam metal roofs and TechShield decking that reduce solar heat gain into the home.
Polished concrete and cork flooring, 2x6 advanced framing with ultra-therm insulation and insulated crawl spaces help the interior details contribute to each home’s no-joke-energy-efficiency. The shared driveways are comprised of two concrete strips to drive on and TurfStone Pavers that allow for rainwater to be absorbed by the ground instead of the sewer system. We've looked for unturned stones, and we've found not-a-one.
And that's why these homes won the Green Development of the Year Award from the Tennessee Chapter of the American Planning Association. These homes have it all, and two of the 3 are for sale. See them up close while developer Christian Rushing explains what makes these homes green.
